Right-hand archway of the Porta Pretoria.

The remains of  the Porta Praetoria built in opus  quadratum with large blocks of peperino, are still an impressive sight today.

The triple-arched, two-storeyed gate was 36 m. wide and 14 m. heigh and was protected by a rectangular tower on either side. The façade overlooking the Via Appia was originally adorned with statues and mouldings but only a few fragments of these have survived.

The Porta Principalis Sinistra had three archways and a postern. We can still see the central arch, which was wider then the other two, and the right-hand arch with the nearby postern which were both walled up in mediaeval times.

This gate too, like the circuit walls of the camp, was built strictly in opus quadratum.
