Convent and church of S. Maria della Stella near the tomb of Horatii and Curiatii.

The convent and church stand on what was probably the site of the early Christian church of St. Senator, above the catacomb of the same name. The present building was begun in about thr mid-16th century but its construction suffered a great many ups and downs and it was not completed until 1687, after the Comune of Albano had make a decisive contribution.

The high altar, which received its polychrome marble decoration in the 1700s, is Baroque in taste, just like the other decoration in the church. Behind the altar there is a structure with a tympanum containing a painting of the Madonna and Child surrounded by angels. The Madonna’s robe is adorned with a star, hence the name of the church. On the wall that divides the presbytery in two, there are four plaster casts. The splendid coat-of-arms of the Savelli princes, who were seigneurs of Albano for several centuries, stand out on the back wall. Next to the church is the historical graveyard of the Comune. Over the entrnce, a classical portal with granite columns and white marble, we can read the inscription telling the year of its consecration, 1833.
