Emissary of the Albano Lake in etchings by Piranesi.

In the locality known as Le Mole there is the outlet of the well-known emissary of the Albano Lake, which reached a total length of 1425 m. According  to Livy the historian the emissary was built in 398-397 B.C. to control the water-level of the lake, and it probably made use of a previously existing tunnel of the 6th cent. B.C.

In the Middle Ages a small village grew up around its outlet, with springs, canals, sluices and mills. We can still see the remains of the tower that once stood a the centre of the busy village.
